Meydan company formation, a Dubai licence without premium-zone pricing.

Meydan gives UK directors a Dubai-registered licence with a broad activity list and no physical office requirement, at a cost that sits well below the premium Dubai zones. It is a common choice for e-commerce, consulting and professional services businesses moving from the UK.

Why UK directors pick Meydan

A Dubai licence, not another emirate

The cheaper UAE zones sit in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah. Meydan is in Dubai, so your registered address matches what UK clients and banks expect to see.

Built for e-commerce and services

The activity list is broad and general-purpose, covering online retail, trading, consulting and professional services rather than being tied to one industry.

No physical office required

Most packages include a flexi-desk arrangement that satisfies the licensing requirement, so there is no office lease to sign before you have revenue in the UAE.

Who a Meydan setup suits

E-commerce and online retail

Online sellers moving from a UK limited company find Meydan's activity list and light office requirements fit how the business actually operates.

Consultants and professional services

Advisory, marketing and professional services businesses get a credible Dubai licence without paying for infrastructure they will never use.

Directors who need a Dubai address

If your clients, bank or investors expect Dubai rather than Sharjah on your paperwork, Meydan delivers that at close to the cost of the cheaper emirates.

First-time UAE setups

For a first UAE entity where the business model may still evolve, a broad activity list avoids being boxed into a niche zone you later outgrow.

Who Meydan probably doesn't suit

Meydan probably isn't the right choice if you run regulated financial services, which belong in DIFC; if you trade physical commodities or need warehousing, where DMCC, JAFZA or RAKEZ are built for the job; or if minimising cost matters more than a Dubai address, in which case SPC, SHAMS or Ajman will come in lower.

What a Meydan setup actually costs

Across our UAE setups generally, licences start around £3,000–£3,500 a year, with a realistic first-year total, including visa, banking and a proper UK exit, usually £8,000–£15,000. Meydan typically sits in the middle of that range: above the Sharjah and Ajman zones, comfortably below DMCC or DIFC.

The figure that moves most is visas. An entry-level package with no visa allocation looks cheap next to a package sized for you, a spouse and a member of staff, and the gap between them is usually larger than the difference between one free zone and another. It is worth sizing this around your actual plans before comparing headline licence prices.

The Detail

What each stage of a Meydan setup actually involves

1

Free consultation & zone fit

1–3 business days

We check that Meydan genuinely fits your activity and your plans, rather than assuming it, and compare it honestly against IFZA and the lower-cost Sharjah zones.

Common snag: A Dubai address is often worth paying for, but not always. If nobody in your supply chain or client base will ever look at the emirate on your licence, we will say so.

2

Activity & package selection

2–5 business days

We match your business to the right activity code and choose the package tier that carries the visa allocation you actually need.

Common snag: Choosing the cheapest package and planning to upgrade once visas are needed usually costs more overall than sizing it correctly at the start.

3

Application submission & licence issuance

Usually 1–2 weeks

We submit the full application and coordinate Meydan's review through to licence issuance and your registered address being confirmed.

Common snag: Trade name rejections are the most common avoidable delay; submitting two or three viable options up front keeps the file moving instead of restarting the name step.

4

Visa, Emirates ID & banking

Visa/Emirates ID 2–3 weeks · banking 2–4 weeks, run in parallel

Once the licence is issued, your residency visa and Emirates ID processing run alongside your UAE corporate bank account application.

Common snag: Banks assess the substance behind the licence, not just the licence itself. A flexi-desk package with a thin business plan draws more questions than the same package with a clear account of where revenue comes from.

Before You Start

Documents & requirements checklist

What a UK director actually needs to have ready for a Meydan application, so nothing holds up your file once we submit it.

To submit the licence application

  • Passport copy for every shareholder and the appointed manager, at least six months' validity remaining.
  • Passport-style photograph, white background.
  • Proof of current UK residential address, a utility bill or bank statement, usually no older than three months.
  • A business plan or activity description, matched to your chosen Meydan activity code.
  • Two to three preferred trade name options, to avoid a restart if the first is rejected.
  • Confirmation of how many residence visas you expect to need, since this determines the package tier.

To finish licensing, banking & visas

  • Flexi-desk or office agreement for your chosen package, normally issued as part of the licence rather than sourced separately.
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC), only relevant if you already hold a UAE residency visa sponsored by a different employer.
  • UK company documents (Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum & Articles), if the Meydan entity is a subsidiary of your existing UK limited company.
  • A more detailed business plan for the corporate bank account application, most UAE banks want more than the licence application required.
  • Medical test and biometrics appointment, completed in person during one short UAE trip, for each visa applicant.
  • Emirates ID application documents, processed alongside the residency visa once approved.

This covers what most Meydan applications need; your specific activity and package tier can add or remove items, which we confirm before you gather anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Across our UAE setups generally, licences start around £3,000–£3,500 a year, with a realistic first-year total, including visa, banking and a proper UK exit, usually £8,000–£15,000. Meydan typically sits in the middle of that range: more than a Sharjah or Ajman licence, less than DMCC or DIFC, which is roughly what you would expect for a Dubai address without premium-zone pricing.
Meydan Free Zone is based at Meydan in the Nad Al Sheba area of Dubai, so yes, your licence and registered address are Dubai rather than another emirate. For UK directors whose clients, banks or investors expect to see a Dubai address on invoices and contracts, that is usually the single most practical reason to choose Meydan over a cheaper zone further out.
Meydan supports a broad, general-purpose activity list covering e-commerce, trading, consulting, professional services, marketing and a range of digital businesses, rather than being tied to one industry the way DIFC (financial services) or SHAMS (media) are. Because the list is wide, the practical question is usually not whether your activity is available but which specific activity code matches how your business actually earns, which we confirm before applying.
Most Meydan packages include a flexi-desk or virtual office arrangement that satisfies the licensing requirement, so a separate physical office is not normally needed to get started. If you later want dedicated space, or need a larger visa allocation, you can move up to a package that includes it, but very few UK directors need that in year one.
They are close competitors and sit in a similar cost tier, both Dubai-based with broad activity lists and flexi-desk options. IFZA is in Dubai Silicon Oasis and has been established longer with a very wide activity list; Meydan is in Nad Al Sheba and is often chosen for e-commerce and consulting work. In practice the deciding factors tend to be the specific activity code you need, the visa allocation in each package, and the total first-year cost once visas are included, rather than any broad difference in quality between the two.
DMCC is the more prestigious and more expensive Dubai zone, with deep infrastructure for commodities, precious metals and large-scale trading, and a reputation that carries weight with banks and international counterparties. Meydan is materially cheaper and lighter-touch, which suits a services, consulting or e-commerce business that wants a credible Dubai licence without paying for infrastructure it will never use. If you trade physical commodities or expect institutional counterparties to scrutinise your zone, DMCC is worth the premium; otherwise Meydan usually is not the weaker choice, just the proportionate one.
Visa allocation is tied to the package you choose rather than being unlimited, the same principle as most UAE free zones: entry-level flexi-desk packages carry a small allocation, and larger packages or dedicated office space raise it. If you plan to sponsor a spouse, children or staff, it is worth sizing the package around that from the start, because upgrading later is possible but less efficient than getting it right initially.
Meydan licences renew annually, alongside the flexi-desk or office arrangement attached to the package. If a licence is not renewed before it lapses, the free zone applies fines that escalate over time, and any residency visa issued under that licence is put at risk of cancellation. Reinstating a lapsed licence is slower and more expensive than renewing on time, so we diarise renewal dates for clients rather than leaving it to a reminder email.
