UAE Residency Visas for UK Directors: Investor Status, Family Sponsorship and Emirates ID

Setting up a UAE company makes you eligible to sponsor a residency visa for yourself, but it doesn't hand you one automatically. The visa is a separate application, with its own sequence, its own costs, and its own timing considerations that interact directly with the Statutory Residence Test back in the UK. Getting the order right matters as much as getting the paperwork right.
Qualifying for residency as a company owner
As a shareholder or partner in a UAE company (freezone or mainland), you're generally eligible to sponsor your own investor or partner visa, with the specific visa quota and category set by your trade licence. The number of visas your licence can sponsor is decided partly by your office/facility type (a flexi-desk arrangement typically sponsors fewer visas than a larger physical office), so it's worth checking your actual visa quota before assuming you can sponsor as many people as you need.
The residency visa is tied to the company and its licence being active and in good standing: it isn't a one-off grant independent of the business. Letting the trade licence lapse, or the company becoming inactive, puts the residency status at risk along with it.
The application sequence: entry permit to Emirates ID
The process runs in a fixed order once the trade licence is issued: an entry permit (allowing you into the UAE to complete the process), a status-change or entry stamp on arrival, a medical fitness test (blood test and chest X-ray, standard and quick, results are usually available within a few days), Emirates ID biometric registration, and finally the residency visa stamp itself once the Emirates ID is processed.
The medical test and biometrics are the one part of the entire company-and-visa process that cannot be done remotely: they require your physical presence in the UAE, typically a single short trip once the entry permit is issued. Most of what people assume requires a trip (licence application, bank pre-clearance, document submission) can actually be handled remotely; the visa's biometric stage cannot.
End to end, from entry permit to a stamped residency visa, typically runs two to three weeks once the trade licence exists. See our full UK-to-Dubai relocation guide for how this fits into the wider setup timeline.

Sponsoring family: spouse and children
Once your own residency visa is active, you can typically sponsor a spouse and children as dependants, subject to the sponsoring visa holder meeting a minimum salary or income threshold set by immigration authorities (this is checked against your stated company salary, so it needs to be set realistically as part of your UAE payroll setup, not as an afterthought). Each dependant needs their own medical test, Emirates ID and visa stamp, and their supporting documents (marriage certificate, birth certificates) normally need to be attested for use in the UAE, which is worth starting well before the move, since attestation itself takes time.
Family sponsorship adds real, per-dependant cost on top of your own visa. Budget for each family member's visa, medical and Emirates ID fees separately rather than assuming a single "family package" figure covers everyone identically.
Health insurance and the basics of settling in
Health insurance is a mandatory condition of UAE residency, not an optional extra. It has to be in place before or as part of the visa process, and it's a genuine recurring cost that a headline setup-cost figure won't include. Cover ranges from basic mandatory-minimum policies to comprehensive international health plans, and family cover costs meaningfully more than an individual policy.
School registration for relocating families is worth starting early and separately from the company/visa process. Popular international schools in Dubai commonly have waiting lists that run well ahead of a typical relocation timeline, so this is realistically a parallel-track decision, not something to leave until after the visa is sorted.
Investor/partner status through your own company is the route this guide covers. If you're also weighing the Golden Visa's longer-term residency route, our Golden Visa eligibility check checks which pathway you'd actually qualify for.
